Aerobiological Pollen Deposition and Transport of Fraxinus excelsior L. at a Small Spatial Scale

چکیده

The ongoing fragmentation of ash populations due to dieback requires an effective gene flow between individuals; thus, investigations on pollen transport are essential. In this study, comprehensive aerobiological field experiments at two seed plantations in Baden-Württemberg were conducted 2019 and 2020 order study the influence phenology meteorology (especially wind) using self-constructed gravimetric traps located 1.5 5 m a.g.l. Our main objectives investigate local scale dispersion evaluate recommended distance (i.e., 400 m) from other trees according German Forest Reproduction Act. results showed a link meteorology, onset phenological development, topography plantation. plantation Schorndorf was characterized by slope associated cold air flows, suggesting that could be factor contributing higher levels downslope traps. addition, many cases, cardinal direction with highest impaction also identical predominant wind direction. Analyzing data for single detail, we found total catch (31%) measured outside 2019, year very low flower development. contrast, most (33%) caught within 2020, which presented much stronger than (with 11 regarding sums). This indicates, lower year, potential contribution plantation, thus it can harvesting should preferentially take place full mast years. Interestingly, deposition Emmendingen height little difference compared height, but there large temporal pointing vertical variations availability. general, transported larger m, amount decreased substantially increasing distance. At 200 already approx. 50% less captured air. However, even 500 more 10% still captured. ensure cross-pollination healthy trees, individuals or stands not too large, no spatial separation (e.g., conifer stands).

Genetic Characterization of Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Background and Purpose: Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a species with a widespread distribution in Europe. It mostly grows on mesophyll sites, mainly in karst valleys and by forest creeks, and in Herzegovina at northern expositions and higher altitudes with somewhat better types of soil. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 natural populations. We collected dormant buds with branches fro...

Gene flow of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in a fragmented landscape

Gene flow dynamics of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is affected by several human activities in Central Europe, including habitat fragmentation, agroforestry expansion, controlled and uncontrolled transfer of reproductive material, and a recently introduced emerging infectious disease, ash dieback, caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. Habitat fragmentation may alter genetic connectivity and e...

Sex expression and reproductive biology in a tree species, Fraxinus excelsior L.

We investigated Fraxinus excelsior breeding system using field data collected in a natural population and in a seed orchard. First, we attested functional trioecy (co-occurrence of males, hermaphrodites and females), with males producing pollen, hermaphrodites producing both pollen and seeds simultaneously, and females producing seeds. Second, we found that the reproductive system of F. excelsi...

Chloroplast DNA variation and postglacial recolonization of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) in Europe.

We used chloroplast polymerase chain reaction-restriction-fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and chloroplast microsatellites to assess the structure of genetic variation and postglacial history across the entire natural range of the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), a broad-leaved wind-pollinated and wind-dispersed European forest tree. A low level of polymorphism was observed, with only...

Application of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) roots to determine erosion rates in mountain torrents

Due to the effect of global change, the potential risk of natural hazards occurring in alpine areas is expected to increase to an even higher risklevel than has been recorded during the last century. These global changes potentially also have distinct influences on fluvial processes in torrents causing erosion on slopes and riverbanks in forested areas. Dating the time of root exposure along ri...
